I’m auctioning a pair of Olympic red mittens to help Haiti

Donate to Haiti to win this brand new pair of Olympic red mittens...

Written by: Julie Ovenell-Carter

I’ve got ‘em and I’m hoping you want ‘em: a brand new pair of coveted Olympic red mittens, tags and all.

These are the souvenirs of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games–stores here can barely keep them in stock. They cost $10 a pair and a portion of the money goes to help Canadian athletes.

I bought a couple of pairs in Whistler two weeks ago just as a new shipment came in…and just before Haiti’s earthquake nightmare.

It’s a small thing, but I’m going to auction off a pair right here. Just tell me how much you’re going to donate to a registered charity to help Haiti and the most generous gift wins the mittens. I’ll send them anywhere in the world.

(I gave to the Red Cross, but there are others out there. And if you’re Canadian, remember that the federal government will match whatever you give…)

If you’re the winning bidder, you’ll have to send me proof of your donation: either an e-mail or screen-shot of the confirmation page.

The bidding ends Friday, January 22 at 8 pm PST. May the biggest heart win!

Update January 25: And the mittens go to Nancy Lee, who donated $200 to World Vision. Thanks Nancy!

What a great idea. We gave $25 to the Red Cross Haiti Fund, $5 to the Salvation Army Haiti Fund and $25 to Humanitarian Coalition. Thanks for your efforts to help the people of Haiti in their time of need.

I donated $200 to the Red Cross on the 14th of January … that’s before your auction started but does it count?

Hmmmm….good question Kathryn…your donation definitely counts for Haiti, but I think it wouldn’t be fair to allow retroactive bidding for this particular auction!

The bidding stands at $55 now…do I hear $60? Anyone?

$50 to Red Cross and two separate texts of 5 each to Salvation Army. $60!

Wow! You just upped the ante Nancy. (Wondering: is this *the* Nancy Lee, author of Dead Girls? If so, I’m honoured. If not, I’m still honoured, but you should read the “other” Nancy Lee!)

Ok: do I hear $225? Anyone?

That is so great Fiona–thanks! But it looks like Nancy’s $200 takes the mitts…I’m just waiting to see her donation confirmation and then they’ll be in the mail to her…
