Win a copy of “Walking Vancouver” just in time for 2010

Win John Lee's new "Walking Vancouver"

Written by: Julie Ovenell-Carter

Someone over at Heritage House Publishing deserves a bonus for releasing John Lee’s Walking Vancouver: 36 strolls to dynamic neighborhoods, hip hangouts, and spectacular waterfronts just as the city-by-the-sea prepares for the Olympics and its worst case of gridlock since the invention of the automobile.

Local boy Lee is an internationally published travel writer hailing from the UK. He appreciates a good walk almost as much as a good pint (and sometimes both together–see Chapter 8: Gastown Bars).

In this well-conceived $19.95 softcover, he covers plenty of Metro Vancouver ground from the North Shore to New Westminster and everything in between–including the contentious Downtown Eastside.

The maps and directions are clear and easy-to-follow, and for those who already know where they want to go, the index is comprehensive.

As a long-time Vancouverite with a penchant for pedestrian travel, I was delighted to find surprises in these pages: “back story” pullouts that explain the history of taken-for-granted landmarks and vistas, as well as wining, dining and shopping recommendations for each themed stroll.

If I was coming to the 2010 Olympics–or hosting guests–I’d definitely want to find a copy of this book in my Christmas stocking.

(And while you’re waiting: check out TravelSmart2010 for suggestions on how to get around during the Olympics…)

Win Walking Vancouver!

If you’d like a free copy of Walking Vancouver, just leave a comment below explaining why. The most convincing case made by Dec. 13 at 8 pm PST wins.

Tweet this contest (use @theseboots in your tweet) and you’ll get a second chance to win!

Update Dec. 14:

Well that was hard…everyone had such good reasons to want to nab a copy of this book! I decided to give it to someone from out-of-town so that left Paul from Belarus (!), Donna from Alberta, Vik from somewhere in the U.S., and A.R. from “away”. I used www.random.org to pull a random winner…and congrats to Donna Majeau from Edmonton, Alberta! Enjoy your walks!

As an avid Vancouver blogger and booster of the city I would love to win a copy of “Walking Vancouver”. This would allow me to then share the contents of the book to our readers and followers!

I do not even know where New Westminister is, maybe a few guided strolls will help… too many years in London

    Why do I want it?

I am an American soon moving to Vancouver. I am in a love affair with this city and have been for a couple years. Every time I learn more about it, I fall more in love with it. I don’t have a car, so I will be walking everywhere (I prefer walking anyway). A book like this would feed my VanCity addiction AND help me for when I move.

I love Vancouver, walking, exploring, and finding new and interesting things. Moving to the city soon. And I’m just awesome in general :D (or so I try to convince everyone lol)

What more could you ask for?? :)

As a tourist planning to re visit Vancouver, I would love to win a copy of Walking Vancouver. Vancouver is an incredible city, I don’t want to miss anything on my next visit. Love Canada!!

This book sounds perfect for me as I will be moving to Vancouver from Alberta. I very much would like to continue with the lifestyle I have now, walking and taking in events, without having to rely on my future husband to direct me at every turn. There might even be some places mentioned that he doesn’t even know about! I would be thrilled to own this book.

Am I eligible? I would love, love, love this book to help me plan my free moments in Vancouver when I am there next year for the Olympics. I’ve only been to Vancouver once before and it was about 10 years ago. I am making this trip with my Mom and younger brother and would like to make sure they are kept busy when not attending an Olympic event. My brother keeps saying there is nothing to do there and I would love to prove him wrong!
We are all in a Vancouver frenzy and any help on where to shop, what to see and places of interest would be greatly appreciated!
    Good luck to all.

On retirement in a few years, wife and I will be bi-latitudinal, spending May-Sept. in downtown Vancouver, precisely so we can walk everywhere we need or want to go.

I, too, would love this book to help me re-discover my favorite city, particularly in light of my recent commitment to walk 10,000 steps a day. I’m thinking there are millions of delightful steps to be had, both for me and my sweetie, in this tasty tome.

Because I’ve been here for a year now, seen and done so much, but I *still* only feel like I’ve scratched the surface of what this town has to offer. I need a street-level gritty guide to get me out and to bring my friend along too – to show this magnificence to the newbies, and to soften the oldies.

I’d like this book because it will give me something better to do in Vancouver than to find the McBarge…

    Hello, Julie.
I would very much appreciate receiving this book, because it’s not easy to get it in Belarus. Vancouver is my and wife’s dream for over 3 years and we now have a good chance to move there by the end of 2010. I’m shure we’ll learn this book by heart to that happy moment :)

Belarus! Wow, Paul, I can honestly say you’re the first person from Belarus to have commented at TheseBoots! I wish you good luck with your wish to come to Canada–you can tell from this post that it’s a good place to live–and if I can help answer any of your questions about Vancouver, please don’t hesitate to ask!

    Why?

    1-
To better enjoy the city of Vancouver. We go to the same places again, and again, – walks we know and are comfortable with. It would be great to see the city from a fresh perspective.

    2-
My parents will be for a month, and would give them some great ideans for the days when bubby and I both have to work.

I walk in Vancouver… a lot! But lately it has mostly been in laps around the Olympic Superstore. Working and living downtown means sometimes I let myself get a bit limited in my walking destinations but I think this book would help that! Thanks for the contest! It is pretty sweet!

I live in Vancouver. However, I am having guests during the 2010 olympics. This book would be an excellent preview for my guests.

I was so excited to hear I had won the “Walking Vancouver” book contest!
Now I can start planning my adventures in a new city which I’m certain I will love as much as I love St. Albert and Edmonton.
